US President Joe Biden will announce a new policy to protect asylum seekers who have traveled to the country in the past to avoid deportation, according to administration officials.
This new policy will help thousands of people who have lived in the US for 0 years but have not received the country’s law.
These people include those who immigrated to the United States as children with their parents, and those who entered the country illegally as adults but later married a citizen or citizens of the United States.
The law will also help people who entered the United States on a visa but did not return when it expired and have lived in the country for 10 years.
These people also include those who have studied in the United States for a long time and who have paid taxes and obtained employment under humanitarian immigration laws.
As Amin Haroun, a lawyer in Minneapolis, told tabout five hundred to one million people are expected to benefit from this new policy of the Biden administration
There are many Somalis who entered the United States through immigration many years ago who may have this opportunity within 10 years, as attorney Amin Haroun noted.
“Of course yes, there may be Somalis, but not that many, there may be hundreds if not thousands of Somalis.
“So these people already have a law called ‘TPS’ for humanity which is renewable, so it is possible that the Somali people can benefit from it,” says Amin Haroun.
Amin also noted that there were Somalis who were illegally in the United States for a while and benefited from the DACA law that was issued twelve years ago by former US President Obama.
The White House believes more than 500,000 spouses of U.S. citizens will benefit, in addition to 50,000 youths under the age of 21 who were born to U.S. citizen parents.
The program allows spouses and children to apply for permanent residency without leaving the United States, and the system eliminates a potentially lengthy process if deportation were to break up families.
This shows that immigration is the number one concern for many voters ahead of the presidential election in November.
According to legal expert Amin Haroun, this is in response to President Biden’s promise in the last election and pressure from immigrant advocacy groups that oppose the laws that restrict asylum seekers from entering the United States.
“President Biden, there’s an election coming up and he wants to crack down on people because he’s already taken action against immigration,” said lawyer Amin Haroun
