In a historic meeting yesterday, a Technical Committee of the Federal Government of Somalia and a Technical Committee from UNSOM sat together. The negotiations, which have just started, will intensify in the coming weeks, as the two Committees are expected to set a timetable for the transfer of UNSOM from its operations in Somalia.
Some of the functions of the political office of the United Nations will be taken over by the Government of Somalia, and others will be continued by the United Nations Office which will replace it, which is similar to the offices of the UN in most countries of the world.
The technical committee of Somalia, which includes officials from the Offices of the President, the Prime Minister, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and National Security, was led by Ambassador Yusuf Garad Omar, from the UNSOM side, although the Special Envoy of the Secretary General, Ambassador James Swan participated in the telephone call in New York, led by George Conway, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations.
This action is a symbol of the progress achieved by the Government of Somalia, as in the next year 2025, Somalia will become a member of the Security Council of the United Nations.
