Washington (alcasimada.com) – President Joe Biden almost said that he will not run again for the office of the president of the United States, ending his campaign for re-election.
Biden said in a post on X that he will continue to serve as president of the United States and as commander-in-chief until his term expires in January 2025.
He added that he will address the nation this week.
“It was the greatest honor of my life to be your president. “While it is my intention to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country that I step down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.
His withdrawal paves the way for his successor, Kamala Harris, to become the first black woman to run for president.
The 81-year-old Biden did not specify the name of Harris in the letter in which he was close to his decision.
It is also unclear whether top Democrats will challenge Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination, and whether the party will choose to make the race open to all.
Biden’s decision follows a wave of overt and underhanded pressure from lawmakers and Democratic officials to drop out of the race after his poor performance in a debate with Republican candidate Donald Trump.
